I always knew that I pick up new series pretty randomly. Sure, I take people's suggestions, but they just kinda pile up on my MAL, as I watch animé rather irregularly. On the other hand, I sometimes pick up stuff on a whim. Like the time I picked up Kiddy Grade because I saw the ending theme in a video with Cruel Angel's Thesis (when searching for the latter), and really liked the music.
Most recently, I just watched the first episode of You're Under Arrest. I saw Uta~Kata a while back, which led me to the group that did its theme songs, savage genius. They have this song called "Mighty Body" (or maybe "Mighty Buddy", I'm not sure), and in looking for it on Youtube, thanks to related videos I discovered that it's actually the theme song of You're Under Arrest--at least, the Full Throttle subseries. Haven't decided whether I want to go on with this yet, though since the OVA's only 4 eps I might as well finish it.
How do you find stuff to watch? Do you stay up to date with new series, or do you follow the works of one studio or one director/composer/other staff person, or what?

Most of the animes I watched such as Fullmetal Alchemist, Samurai Champloo, Bleach and InuYasha were because they were on Adult Swim. That's how I find most of my anime series.
One of my friends from middle school got me into anime by introducing me to Yu Yu Hakusho and InuYasha. He and I used to stay up late watching every anime on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.
But sometimes I see trailers for animes on Youtube. I started watching Bacanno and Big Windup because I saw trailers for them on Funimation's Youtube channel.

I usually look at all the new anime coming out and check the drawing style/categories on it (shounen etc.) If it appeals to me I will watch a few episodes and see if I want to stick with it. It seems to be working so far, but I have so many to watch because I like so much x.x lol I think my "to-watch" list is at about 18.

I usually try to figure out if I'm in the mood for something action, romance-comedy, or drama-filled , and from there, I just go through MAL or ask friends/check forums to see what's popular at the moment ^_^

I go to a website where they have anime streams and click things. Really.
Also - random leads - I watched Kodomo no Jikan because I decided to click "Know Your Meme" and it led me to a video of it. What caught me was how energetic the ED was, so I got curious.
Then back to the random clicking.

wow, old thread! But still relevant.
Lately I've been searching for "top 10 anime of 201X" and watch all of those.
There's also new anime released every season, so sometimes I'll watch the top 3 or 4 from the past season.
I used to watch whatever was on TV but US television is too heavy on playing boys anime.
Not sure when shows like Mushishi, Natsume, Hell Girl, or Candy Candy will make it to televisions in the US. Probably never ;u;
